CHAPEL HILL—Four-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina (15-3) has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced on Sunday night with the release of its28-team field.
Carolina, an automatic qualifier as the ACC champion, will host NCAA games on Friday May 10 and Sunday May 12 at the new UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium in Chapel Hill.
"We're excited to compete in a very competitive NCAA Tournament once again this year," Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy said on Sunday night. "I am glad we were rewarded for our regular season body of work, and I am confident that we are ready for the challenge ahead. Florida and Johns Hopkins are both good teams, so we will have our work cut out for us on Sunday either way."
Florida and Johns Hopkins will meet in the first round on Friday at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to play UNC in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Parking will be available in the Raleigh Road Visitors Lot, the Bell Tower Deck and the Cobb Deck. Fans should plan to allow extra time to reach Sunday's game because UNC's commencement ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. that day and may affect parking and traffic.
Tickets are $10 for adults (age 18+), $5 for children (7-17) and seniors (55+), $3 for students and free for kids age 6 and younger.
The Tar Heels enter the NCAA Tournament with a 15-3 record, including a 5-2 ACC mark. Carolina won its fourth consecutive ACC Tournament last weekend, beating Virginia Tech, Duke and Boston College to sweep to the title.
The Tar Heels earn an NCAA Tournament bid for the 15th year in a row and the 21st time overall. Carolina has won the NCAA championship twice in the last six years (2013, 2016). Head coach Jenny Levy's 32 NCAA Tournament wins rank fifth in NCAA history.
UNC is a top-five seed for the 11th year in a row. Carolina is making its 21st NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 years as a varsity program. The Tar Heels are 32-18 in NCAA Tournament games and have made 10 semifinal appearances (1997, 1998, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018), including seven in the last 10 years.
Maryland is the No. 1 overall seed, followed by No. 2 seed Boston College and No. 3 seed UNC. Northwestern is the No. 4 seed, Syracuse is No. 5, Virginia is No. 6, Princeton is No. 7 and Michigan is No. 8.
The tournament begins with two opening-round games May 7. Eight sites will host first- and second-round competition Friday, May 10, and Sunday, May 12, and four quarterfinal games will be played Saturday, May 18 or Sunday, May 19. These preliminary-round games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions.
The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the national semifinals hosted by Johns Hopkins University at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Maryland. The semifinal games will be shown live on ESPN3 at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Eastern time, Friday, May 24. The championship game will air live on ESPNU Sunday, May 26 at Noon.
