Greene Leads Six Tar Heels Named To Academic All-ACC Teams
June 21, 2019 | Track & Field, Academics
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- North Carolina redshirt junior Nicole Greene has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's outdoor track and field, the ACC announced Friday. Greene is joined on the All-ACC Academic women's team by Tar Heel sophomores Anna Keefer and Jill Shippee. UNC's Alex Milligan, Onyedikachi Ohia-Enyia and Drew Pedersen were named to the men's team.
Greene, an exercise and sport science major from Ponte Vedra, Fla., was the 2019 ACC Champion in high jump with a mark of 1.88 meters (6-2) that matched her lifetime best. She followed up with a jump of 1.87 meters (6-1.5) at the NCAA Championship that was good for second place, just one centimeter behind the winner. Greene, who was the 2018 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for indoor track and field, is minoring in chemistry and medical anthropology, and plans to go on to medical school after graduating from Carolina.
Keefer, a sophomore communication studies major from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., earned her second All-ACC Academic honors of the school year, after being honored following the indoor season. Keefer competed in three events at the NCAA East Prelimiary Round, finishing 18th in the long jump, 19th in the 100 meters and 31st in the 200 meters. Her personal best 100 time ranks fourth in North Carolina program history.
Shippee, a sophomore exercise and sport science major from Clifton Park, N.Y., was honored for the first time. At the ACC Outdoor Championships, Shippee was one of three UNC women to capture an ACC title. Shippee's winning mark of 224-3 (68.36 meters) in the women's hammer throw set both an ACC Championship meet record as well as a conference record in the event.
All three of the Tar Heel men on the All-ACC Academic Team were recognized for the first time. Milligan is a sophomore business administration major from State College, Pa. Ohia-Enyia is a freshman exercise and sport science major from Tarrytown, N.Y. Pedersen, from Apex, N.C., graduated from UNC in May after majoring in business administration.
Ohia-Enyia led off the men's 4x400 at the ACC Outdoor Championships, helping the relay win their second of back-to-back ACC titles. He also helped the 4x400 place seventh at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.
Two weeks after earning his first-ever All-ACC finish, Milligan finished 15th in the men's 1,500 meters at the NCAA East Prelims.
Pedersen also capped off his career with a second-team All-ACC finish in the men's pole vault at the ACC Championships.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
The men's ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year is Iliass Auoani of Syracuse.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Each student-athlete named to the 2019 All-ACC Outdoor Track and Field Academic Teams was an All-American or an All-ACC first- or second-team performer, a qualifier for the NCAA Championship finals June 5-8 in Austin, and/or an ACC Performer of the Week selection during the regular season.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
