Hitt Leads Tar Heel Contingent in Pinehurst
University of North Carolina senior Austin Hitt shot an even-par 70 and former Tar Heel Kevin O'Connell shot a 71 in the first round of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Monday at Pinehurst No. 2.
Hitt is tied for 28th place in the 312-player field, which will contest round two of stroke play on Tuesday. O'Connell is tied for 41st. The top 64 players after Tuesday's round will advance to match play which begins on Wednesday.
Hitt had four birdies and four bogeys. O'Connell, who played at UNC from 2008-11 and won the 2018 Mid-Amateur to earn an exemption into the field, had a pair of birdies en route to his 1-over finish.
Hitt and O'Connell are among seven current or former UNC players in the field. Junior Ryan Gerard opened with a 72 and is tied for 73rd place; incoming freshman Austin Greaser shot a 75 on Pinehurst No. 4; former Tar Heel Henry Do shot 76 on No. 4; sophomore Ryan Burnett opened with an 82 on No. 2; and alum Andy Sajevic had an 86 on No. 2.
The players will switch courses for Tuesday's second round.
