Tar Heels Open Season With Win Against The Tribe

CHAPEL HILL — The North Carolina women's gymnastics opened its regular season with a dual-meet win, 194.775 to 190.325, against William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels had a wildly successful showing with a sweep of the first-place finishes in all five events and nine top-three individual event finishes.
Two Carolina gymnasts, senior Khazia Hislop and freshman Elizabeth Culton, combined for all five first-place individual performances. Hislop won the vault (9.900), beam (9.825) and floor (9.850) while Culton won the bars (9.850) and all-around events (39.050) in a memorable freshman debut.
Carolina opened the meet on vault and scored 48.925 for its best rotation of the night. Hislop placed first with a score of 9.900 while Mikayla Robinson scored 9.800 to place second. Alexis Allen also placed inside the top-five with a score of 9.775.
For the second rotation, Carolina totaled 48.550 on the uneven bars. Culton led the Tar Heels with a first-place finish and a score of 9.850 in her first collegiate event. Rounding out an all-Carolina podium were Drew Aldridge and Grace Donaghy with scores of 9.800.
On beam, the Tar Heels scored 48.425 led again by Hislop who won the event with a 9.825. Allen, Culton and Donaghy each scored 9.675 on beam to finish tied for third place.
The Tar Heels closed out their season opener with a 48.875 on the floor. Hislop notched a 9.850 to secure the sweep in her three performances, and Culton and Robinson tied for second in the event with scores of 9.800. Senior Jamie Antinori followed close behind with a fourth-place finish and score of 9.725.
Carolina will travel to the Bluegrass State to compete in Lexington, Ky., next Friday in an event hosted by the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Competition is expected to begin at 7 p.m.
