Carolina Notes
• Carolina is 1-0 overall and 1-0 at the Smith Center.
• Caleb Love and RJ Davis started at guard, the first time two freshmen guards started in a game for UNC since the 2007 NCAA East Regional final vs. Georgetown (Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington – they started together 32 times that year). In 2005-06, freshmen guards Bobby Frasor and Marcus Ginyard started 14 times, including the season opener.
• This is the third pair of Tar Heel freshmen guards to start under head coach Roy Williams.
• Carolina's first subs were Andrew Platek and Day'Ron Sharpe.
• Carolina did not allow a field goal until the 11:23 mark of the first half (it was a three-pointer by Zep Jasper to make the score 16-5, UNC).
• Carolina made four three-pointers, three by freshmen (RJ Davis, Puff Johnson and Caleb Love). Senior Andrew Platek made the other.
• Charleston took its only lead of the game at 43-42 with 15:00 to play, before the Tar Heels went on a 17-0 run over the next 4:43 to take a 59-43 lead.
• This is the second straight season a freshman point guard led UNC in scoring in the season opener (last year Cole Anthony set the ACC record for freshman in a debut with 34 against Notre Dame).
• Carolina committed only nine turnovers and equaled that number by blocking nine shots. UNC turned the ball over 18 times in the season opener vs. Notre Dame a year ago.
• The nine turnovers are the fewest in an opener since UNC had seven against Northern Iowa in 2017-18 and equal the second fewest in a season opener in the Roy Williams era.
• Carolina is 99-12 in season openers, including 17-1 under head coach Roy Williams.
• Carolina is now 209-17 against non-ACC teams in the Smith Center.
Tar Heel Player Notes
• Love (17), Day'Ron Sharpe (13) and Davis (11) scored in double figures. That was the first time three Tar Heel freshmen scored in double figures since 12/21/19 against UCLA when Armando Bacot, Anthony Harris and Jeremiah Francis did that.
• Sharpe had a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) in his debut (Anthony also did that last year).
• Brooks had 11 rebounds, the 15th time in his career he grabbed double-figure rebounds. Brooks scored six points to move within three of 1,000 for his career.
• Platek made a career-high four steals (previous was two twice).
• Puff Johnson played 2:53 (made a three) and Walker Kessler played 4:23 (six points and four rebounds) due to missing several recent practices because of Covid safety protocol.
Roy Williams Notes
• 886-253 overall
• 468-152 at Carolina
Series Notes
• Carolina leads 5-3
