Educate and Advocate: Homelessness Awareness
December 16, 2020 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Throughout the 2020-21 campaign, the UNC women's basketball team will highlight various causes, dedicating the season to advocating for and bringing awareness to issues that are near and dear to the Tar Heel student-athletes and coaching staff.
UNC hosts Syracuse on Thursday and Wake Forest on Sunday, and the team has dedicated both games to raising awareness of the problem of homelessness. which is defined as having a lack of available and affordable housing. You do not have to be living in the streets to be homeless. You may have a roof over your head and still be homeless if you do not have the rights to stay where you live.
Some facts about homelessness:
• The nation is currently facing an affordable housing crisis, and those living in poverty are the most significantly impacted. 8 million extremely low-income households pay at least half of their income toward housing, which puts them at risk of homelessness. (endhomelessness.org)
• The number of homeless individuals in Orange County in 2016 was 80. That number reached a high of 152 in 2018 and then dropped to 131 in 2019. (orangecountync.gov)
• On any night in North Carolina in 2019, over 9,000 people were homeless. Fifty-one percent of this population was African American, even though the North Carolina African American population is roughly 22 percent. Ten percent were veterans and 14 percent were people that experience chronic homelessness. (endhomelessness.org)
This week our team made blankets to donate to a local organization, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, which offers shelters for people who are homeless.
Some ways you can help:
The following organizations offer opportunities to make an impact.
• National Health Care for the Homeless Council
• North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness
• National Alliance to End Homelessness
• Inter-Faith Council for Social Service
• Homeless Shelter Directory
Together we can raise awareness of the problem of homelessness and offer a helping hand.
