Tar Heels Pound Out 12 Hits in 14-0 Shutout Over High Point
Â
Chapel Hill – Second baseman Mikey Madej had three hits, freshman catcher Will Stewart knocked in three runs and first baseman Aaron Sabato cracked his first home run of the season as Carolina blanked High Point, 14-0, Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The Tar Heels are 5-0, while the Panthers drop to 4-1.
Â
Carolina scored two runs in the first, third and sixth innings and plated five in the fifth and three more in the seventh to back the shutout pitching of Michael Oh, Chris Joyner, Nik Pry and Austin Elliott.
Â
Oh made his first UNC start and gave up four hits and struck out four in four innings. Pry was credited with the win as he retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts.
Â
Carolina got on the board in the first on a double error, then added two runs in the third on a run-scoring single by Danny Serretti and a sacrifice fly by Angel Zarate. In the top half of that inning, Zarate had thrown a runner out at the plate from left field to preserve the 2-0 lead.
Â
"Michael Oh was big getting out there and throwing strikes in the first and that's the most important thing for him, his first time out there starting a game for us," says UNC head coach Mike Fox. "I thought today's game changed on one play when Angel Zarate threw the runner out (at home in the third inning). The game goes potentially from 2-1 to 4-0 (when UNC scored twice in the next half inning). "
Â
In the fifth, Stewart drive in two with a single and Madej plated two more with the first of his consecutive doubles.
Â
Sabato capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run shot to left, his 19th as a Tar Heel. The preseason All-America was 1 for 17 this season prior to the home run.
Â
"He hasn't been taking bad swings, he's just been missing, just off a tick," says Fox. "Last year he swung and missed a lot to start his career and he got it going. So we are not worried about Aaron, but it's nice to hit a ball like that and let the air out of the balloon a little, take the pressure off and let him smile a bit."
Â
Dylan Harris scored three times and four Tar Heels – Sabato, Zarate, Stewart and Madej  –knocked in at least two runs.
Â
Carolina is scheduled to return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday in the first of a three-game series against Dallas Baptist.
