Carolina Remains No. 1, Has 7 Ranked Singles Players
February 19, 2020 | Women's Tennis
North Carolina continues to hold its place as the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division I women's tennis after the first computerized rankings of the season were released by the ITA. The Tar Heels now boast a program-record seven singles players and three additional doubles combinations.
Carolina is the only program to have more than one player included in the top 10 of the singles rankings. UNC's unmatched trio includes No. 4 Cameron Morra, No. 5 Alexa Graham and No. 6 Sara Daavettila.
The Tar Heels also lead a group of 13 teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference that are ranked in the top 50. In fact, the Heels will take on fast rising No. 2 Florida State in their conference opener this Friday morning in Tallahassee at 11 a.m. NC State (4), Virginia (9) and Duke (10) are also in the top 10 this week.Â
Alle Sanford checks in at No. 39, while senior Makenna Jones made a gigantic leap to No. 43 in the nation after sitting at 101 a couple weeks ago. Freshmen Kacie Harvey sits at No. 81 and Elizabeth Scotty enters the rankings for the very first time at No. 111.Â
Carolina's school-record seven ranked players are two more than the University of Georgia's five, while a group that includes Duke, NC State, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Stanford, UCLA and Virginia all have four listed this week in the rankings.
In doubles, Daavettila and Graham rose two places to No. 4, while Jones and Morra, who haven't competed together since November, are No. 5.
Jones and Sanford continue to climb up the rankings at No. 19.
