Burnett Fires a Final Round 67
Ryan Gerard rode a 6-under-par 66 to second place and Ryan Burnett fired a final round 67 to lead the University of North Carolina to an 11th-place finish in the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course.
Â
Gerard's third round included seven birdies and one bogey, which came on his 17th hole and knocked him out of the lead. New Mexico's Sam Choi eagled the 18th hole to beat Gerard by three strokes. It was Gerard's second career runner-up finish (also at Notre Dame last year).
Â
Carolina shot 8-under-par today, which equaled the sixth-best round in the 21-team field. That was an eight-stroke improvement for UNC from the second round and 21 shots better than the Tar Heels opened the tournament in Thursday's first round.
Â
Texas A&M won the team title at 19-under-845, five shots clear of New Mexico. BYU was third at 8 under and Illinois fourth at 7 under.
Â
Gerard shot 74-69-66 for a 7-under-209 total. Burnett rebounded from a second-round 77 to shoot 69 today and moved up 45 places to tie for 37th (74-77-67) at 2-over-218.
Â
Austin Hitt tied for 57th (5-over-221), Austin Greaser tied for 67th (6-over-222) and Dougie Ergood tied for 106th (14-over-230).
"Ryan Gerard had a very positive week and earned his way into contention with his play, particularly in the second and third rounds," says UINC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "He will be the first to admit he didn't have his best stuff this week, but he is a very intelligent golfer and understands his own game extremely well. He hit enough good shots, but ultimately used his brain, heart, and short game to shoot low scores. We'd put G's short game up against anyone's in the country. Burney (Ryan Burnett) also played great in the final round. Other than that, the rest of the week was nowhere near our standard. We'll return home and all of us will work to get better."
