Three Tar Heels Earn All-ACC, Towns Breaks UNC Record
February 28, 2020 | Track & Field
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - North Carolina's Anna Keefer, Sydney Banks and Draven Crist each earned All-ACC honors and Qhiyal Towns broke a 10-year-old program record to highlight day two of the 2020 ACC Indoor Championships for the Tar Heels.
Keefer, a junior from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., took third in the women's long jump with a mark of 20-3.75 (6.19m). With another first-team All-ACC finish, she is now a five-time All-ACC long jumper across the indoor and outdoor events. Keefer first earned All-ACC honors in the event as a freshman in 2018 when she won the ACC title. Banks, a freshman from Woodbridge, Va., finished sixth in the women's high jump to earn, clearing 5-7 (1.70m) for second-team All-ACC honors in her first season as a Tar Heel. Crist, a fifth year from Burlington, N.C., took third in the men's high jump for first-team All-ACC accolades with a season-best clearance of 7-0.25 (2.14m), quarter-inch shy of his lifetime best.
On the track, four Tar Heels rewrote the Carolina track & field record books. Qhiyal Towns, a sophomore from Newport News, Va., broke the UNC school record in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.67 seconds. The previous record was held by Zach Brown, who ran the 60 in 6.72 seconds during the 2010 indoor season. Dontavian Smith, a junior from Roxboro, N.C., ran the third-fastest time in school history with a 6.73 second performance. Smith will join Towns in Saturday's 60-meter final and will also appear in the 200-meter final after advancing with a time of 21.39 in his preliminary heat. In the women's 60 meters, Anna Keefer extended her second-best time in school history and qualified for the women's 60-meter final with a new personal record of 7.35 seconds. Lauryn Hall, a sophomore from Harvest, Ala., broke into the top-five all-time lists and now ranks fourth in Carolina history with a time of 7.43 seconds.
Six Carolina athletes advanced to seven event finals on Saturday, and the Tar Heels combined for 10 new indoor personal records as well as eight season bests. After two days of competition, both the men's and women's teams sit in 10th place in the overall rankings.
Field competition resumes Saturday with the men's shot put at 11:00 a.m. while the men's 60-meter hurdles final will kick off the track events at noon.
