UNC MEN'S GOLF ROLLS TO VICTORY AT GENERAL HACKLER CHAMPIONSHIP
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Ryan Burnett and Austin Greaser shot 3-under-par 69s in the third and final round to lead the University of North Carolina to a 13-stroke victory at the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
The event was hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Tar Heels were originally scheduled to play yesterday and today in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic but switched tournaments on March 6 due to travel concerns related to the coronavirus.
Four Tar Heels shot under par today – Burnett, Greaser, Ryan Gerard (70) and Austin Hitt (71). Dougie Ergood shot a 74. It was Carolina's first round with four players under par since the opening tournament of the season, the Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, N.Y., which UNC also won.
The Tar Heels shot 280-284-279 for a three-day total of 21 under 843. Today's 9-under-round of 279 was the best of the tournament for any team and all three of UNC's rounds were among the five lowest for the event.
"This was a great team win for the Tar Heels as everyone contributed in significant ways," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "The guys were exceptional throughout today's final round, especially at the start where we were 10 under after six holes. Being a good final round team is important to us and our guys performed that way very well today.
"We didn't play well in Hawai'i (Feb. 20-22). All of us had become a bit too results oriented. We came home from Hawai'i and talked a lot about us, our process, our focus, commitment and confidence. Our preparation before this event was our best of the year and obviously it's great to see all that pay off for our guys."
Burnett tied for second place, his third top-two finish of the season after shooting 69-72-69 for 6 under 210. He was tied for the lead through 53 holes but double-bogeyed the final hole. Earlier this season he won at Turning Stone, tied for second at Notre Dame and tied for third at Duke. The Lafayette, Calif., native birdied four of the first eight holes this morning to help extend Carolina's overnight lead, which was five strokes over Wake Forest.
Burnett is now 29 under par in eight tournaments this season. His stroke average of 70.21 is on pace to be the lowest in UNC history.
The Tar Heels shot 9 under on the front side and even on the back nine on Tuesday.
Gerard shot 70 for the second round in a row to finish seventh at 4 under 212. He was one of four Tar Heels to place in the top 20. This is Gerard's fifth top-10 performance in eight tournaments this season and the 10th of his collegiate career. It was the fifth time this season he finished a tournament under par.
Burnett and Gerard hold the two lowest career stroke averages in Carolina men's golf history.
Hitt followed back-to-back par rounds on Monday with a 1 under 71 to tie for 14th.
Greaser gave Carolina plenty of early momentum on Monday with an opening-round 67 and closed with a 69 to tie for 18th at even par (67-80-69–216). Today, he eagled the second hole, a 440-yard par 4 by holing out a gap wedge from 118 yards.
Ergood tied for 31st at 3 over 219.
The win is Carolina's fifth in the last three seasons under DiBitetto and assistant coach Matt Clark.
"I want to thank the coaches and staff at Coastal Carolina and the tournament staff at the General Hackler Championship for accommodating our request last week to switch tournaments and play closer to home with all that is going on in the world right now," says DiBitetto. "I also want to thank the people who run the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. They also operate a first-class tournament and were very understanding and worked with us to make the change."
UNC returns to action March 21-22 when it plays host to the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course.
