Q and A with Coach Carrie Moore
April 29, 2020 | Women's Basketball
A year ago, Courtney Banghart was hired as UNC's new women's basketball coach, and she made Carrie Moore her first hire. At the time, Banghart called Moore, picked to be assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, a "difference maker," and that has proven to be true. Moore, who spent five years with Banghart at Princeton before coming to UNC, helped to land the 10th-ranked recruiting class in the country, while also serving as a crucial coaching voice on the bench and in practice, with a focus on mentoring the Tar Heel guards.

After her first season in Chapel Hill and as the staff focuses on the upcoming campaign, Moore recently took some time to look back at her Carolina career so far.

Favorite moments from the season
Carrie Moore: "Our win against NC State was for sure a highlight for me. A home win over your undefeated in-state rival is pretty special. The Wolfpack seemed to somehow always bring out the best in our team and that night, we clicked on all cylinders. Our players made HUGE plays, our coaching staff did a heck of a job and our fans were into it every second of the way. The joy in our locker room that night was memorable for sure.
Â
"I also really enjoyed our trip to Cancun. The sun and beach resort in November was a great backdrop to a really fun week with our team. It was the first time we were all really able to get away with each other and spend some quality time together in the midst of what was such a transformative year for everyone involved. We were also playing some of our best basketball of the year and beat two solid teams in Temple and Missouri while we were there. And the sunset boat cruise the last night of the trip will be something I will probably never forget. Good times all around!"
Â
On the topic of memories, what will you remember most from your first season in Chapel Hill?
CM: "The people are what I remember most from my first season in Chapel Hill. This team will always be our first, which makes it a very special group for so many reasons. Specifically, summer workouts with some of the guard group will always make me smile. We got after it! And then another moment I will always remember is Liz Roberts' senior speech at the post-game Senior Day celebration with our team and families. I thought she really nailed it in that moment. It was such an honest and genuine take on the significance of being a Tar Heel. Well done, Lizard!" Â
Â
Lessons learned during the course of this first year?
CM: "One of the lessons I learned from this past season is that change is hard for everyone involved. I think we all felt it at different times throughout the year, players and coaches, and dealt with it in our own ways. But the other huge lesson in this is that change is necessary and promotes growth. I would say we all were stretched in ways we never saw coming this season and at the end of the year, we were all better for having done it. I am a better coach for sure."
Â
Looking ahead to 2020-21, what do you expect from next year's team?
CM: "I expect a ton of excitement and energy surrounding next year's team. Some unknowns to be sure, but I think we have a good mix of youth and experience to put together something special. The goal is to win more and laugh often! And I'm sure I speak for everyone involved when I say that we can't wait to get to work."
Â
Anything else to add?
CM: "This place is truly special. I'm so grateful to be surrounded by our Carolina family daily and coach some of the very best student-athletes in the country. It's a great day to be a Tar Heel, for sure. The future is bright!"
