Celebrate Carolina: The ACC's Only Three-Time MVP
May 28, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Ivory Latta had plenty of occasions to celebrate in a Carolina jersey, so it's fitting she kicks off our Celebrate Carolina series. Each Thursday, we'll be serving up a new highlight from UNC women's basketball program history, and it's safe to say Latta will make additional appearances.
For starters, however, we're looking back to her play at the Atlantic Coast Conference tournaments in 2005, 2006 and 2007, all played in Greensboro, N.C. The guard from McConnells, S.C., led the Tar Heels to three consecutive crowns and was named ACC Tournament MVP all three years. She remains the only player in conference history to earn MVP honors three times.
Her first title, in 2005, came after the Tar Heels finished as runners-up the previous season. Playing as the No. 1 seed for the first time since 1997, UNC blazed through the field, beating Miami then Virginia before knocking off second-seeded Duke 88-67 in the title game. That win produced one of the program's most iconic images, that of a grinning Latta celebrating by effortlessly executing pull-ups on the rim.
In 2006, UNC was again seeded No. 1. The Tar Heels beat Virginia and NC State then beat Maryland 91-80 in the final, with the 11-point margin in the championship game the tightest of the title run. Latta scored 26 points against the Terps to lead the Tar Heels to another crown.
In her senior year, 2007, second-seeded UNC beat Virginia Tech and Maryland, then topped NC State 60-54 in the championship game. Latta led the Tar Heels with 20 points in the final, including a first-half layup that made her Carolina's all-time scoring leader.
Over nine tournament games in that three-year span of championships, Latta averaged 21.4 points per game.
Following Latta's graduation, the Tar Heels would go on to win a fourth consecutive crown in 2008. With a total of nine titles, UNC leads all current conference members.
