UNC Freshman is Second Overall
University of North Carolina freshman Peter Fountain shot 8 under par over 36 holes to finish second at the 56th annual Mobipaid North Carolina Open, which was contested this week at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
The Raleigh native joined the UNC men's golf program in January 2020 after a standout prep career at Broughton High School, where he won the 2019 4-A state championship.
Fountain opened with a 69, then shot a 6-under-par 65 in the second round to finish two strokes behind medalist Kelly Mitchum, the 1991 ACC champion and a professional player. Fountain was the highest finishing amateur in the 147-player field.
"It felt so great to be back," says Fountain, who was playing for the first time since October 2019. "I missed the competition and the unique pressure tournament golf brings.
"Shooting 65 in the second round was a lot like the first round. I hit a lot of good shots, but I just didn't make many mistakes. I shot a lower score simply because I was able to make a few more putts."
