Tar Heels Take Three Events To Open Season
January 15, 2021 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. – North Carolina opened the 2021 indoor season Friday at the Virginia Tech Invitational with three event wins and several performances worthy of the school record books.
Jill Shippee, a senior from Clifton Park, N.Y., won the weight throw with a distance of 61-11 ½ (18.88 m), the fourth-longest throw in Carolina history.
In the men's 60 meters, senior Isaiah Palmer ran a 6.77 in the prelims and then duplicated that time in the final to win. His time ranks fourth in the Tar Heel record books.
The Tar Heels took the top two spots in the men's weight throw, with both of those among the top performances in program history. Troy Yearwood's winning 67-0 is fifth in program history and James Joycey threw a second-place 63-7 ½, which ranks seventh all-time. Both are junior transfers who were competing for the first time as Tar Heels.
