Men's Golf Returns to Competition at Camp Creek GC
January 16, 2021 | Men's Golf
24th-Ranked Tar Heels in an All-ACC Field
College golf returns for the first time in 10 months when the University of North Carolina plays in a 10-team, all-Atlantic Coast Conference field at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational Sunday through Tuesday (January 17-19).
Florida State is the host for the 54-hole tournament, which will be contested at the Camp Creek Golf Club in Watersound, Fla., on the Sunshine State's Gulf Coast.
The field includes Carolina, FSU, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
"Camp Creek is a great golf course," said UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto after Saturday's practice round. "None of us have previously been here so getting out there today was very productive. The greens are difficult and many of them have significant slope. Short game will be critical, as well as the placement of shots into the green. Another key will be adapting to changing temperatures and winds."
Fifth-year senior Austin Hitt will be playing in his 47th event as a Tar Heel. Joining Hitt in the lineup are senior Ryan Gerard, sophomore Austin Greaser and freshmen Peter Fountain and Ryan Smith. Junior Dougie Ergood will be competing as an individual entry.
The six players secured spots in the lineup over four rounds of qualifying upon returning to Chapel Hill after the New Year.
Carolina is one of five ACC teams in the tournament that are ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches poll that was released this week. Wake Forest is 17th, Georgia Tech 20th, UNC 24th and Clemson and Duke are both 25th.
"We can't wait to get started. It's been more than 300 days since we competed as a team. We have a great group of guys who love to compete together, for each other and for the University of North Carolina. We've had so much fun just being back on the road together these last couple of days and now we are thrilled to compete as a team again for the first time in 10 months. We're excited about the season and the roster we have. We have an excellent blend of veterans and newcomers and we also depth. We ended last year ranked in the top 15 in the country, returned our entire roster, but have two freshmen who earned their way into the starting lineup in their first qualifier. The depth and competition within our own team will make each guy better and our team better as the season goes on."
For Covid-19 safety protocol, each team is playing with three of its own players in two different groups. Sunday's pairings include Gerard, Smith and Ergood teeing off on the 10th hole at 9:30 a.m. and Hitt, Fountain and Greaser starting at 9:39.
