Tar Heels 5th After 18 Holes at Camp Creek
Peter Fountain, a freshman from Raleigh playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 4-under-par 68 to lead the University of North Carolina to an even-par finish in round one of the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational Sunday in Watersound, Fla.
It was UNC's first competition since winning the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach on March 10, 2020.
The Tar Heels shot 288 and are fifth in the 10-team, all-Atlantic Coast Conference field hosted by Florida State at the Camp Creek Golf Club.
Clemson had an 8-under 64 by Jacob Bridgeman and a pair of 3-under 69s from Colby Patton and Kyle Cottam to take the day one lead at 12-under 276. Wake Forest is second at 6 under, Duke is third at 5 under and FSU is fourth at 3 under.
Fountain birdied his third and fourth holes (UNC began on the 10th hole), made the turn at 1 under, then shot a 3-under 33 on the front side. That included birdies on one and seven and an eagle 3 on the 542-yard, par-5 third hole. The 2019 North Carolina high school 4-A state champion from Broughton is in fifth place in the individual standings.
Senior Ryan Gerard had one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars to shoot 72. Fifth-year senior Austin Hitt and sophomore Austin Greaser shot 74s and freshman Ryan Smith opened with a 76.
Junior Dougie Ergood, playing as an individual entry, is tied for 11th after a 2-under 70. He had five birdies on the day, the fifth most in the field, including four on the front nine.
The second of three scheduled rounds is Monday.
