October 18, 2021 | Track & Field
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Jody Stewart has joined the UNC track and field staff as an assistant coach, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Chris Miltenberg announced Monday. Stewart, who brings an extensive résumé to North Carolina and most recently has served as head coach at Texas State, will focus on coaching and developing the Tar Heel sprinters and hurdlers.
"We're really excited to bring Jody on board at Carolina," Miltenberg said. "He and I have worked together many years, from our time as assistants together at Georgetown to him being on my staff at Stanford our first several years. He did an incredible job building our sprints group at Stanford and now adding experience as a head coach at Texas State makes him an incredible hire for us right now. I know he will connect with our student-athletes and continue to build our sprints and hurdles group into one of the very best in the ACC and the NCAA."
During the past six years as Director of Track & Field/Cross Country at Texas State University, Stewart's teams accumulated eight conference titles and achieved the university's first Triple Crown (winning women's cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field titles in 2017-28). Stewart earned eight Conference Coach of the Year accolades and his teams tied for the most league titles under one head coach in program history.
Prior to his time at Texas State, Stewart spent three years as Associate Head Coach at Stanford, as a member of Miltenberg's staff. There Stewart coached the Cardinal's sprinters and hurdlers, including a World Championship finalist, an NCAA champion, an NCAA collegiate record holder, a Bowerman finalist, an Australian National Champion, an NCAA West Regional Athlete of the Year, a Pac-12 Conference Athlete of the Year and a USTFCCCA Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Over that span, his sprinters and hurdlers won All-America honors on 19 occasions.
Stewart spent the 2010-12 seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown, helping to lead the Hoyas to a slew of honors, including a Big East Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship in 2012. He coached four Olympic Trials qualifiers, three NCAA All-America honorees and eight NCAA preliminary qualifiers.
Stewart also has coached at Bowling Green, Northwood University and Ashland University, his alma mater. As a student-athlete at Ashland, he was a four-time All-America honoree as a sprinter and also excelled academically, earning USTFCCA All-Academic recognition all four years. Stewart holds a master's degree in sports management from Cleveland State.
In 2021, he was appointed Team USA's head men's track and field coach for the Pan American U20 Championships. In 2020, he was appointed Team USA's head men's track and field coach for the World U20 Championships.
"UNC is a special place in regards to both academics and athletics," Stewart said. "I look forward to working with Chris, as we have had great success working together at Georgetown and Stanford. I also look forward to working with an outstanding group of student-athletes and continuing the development of the sprints and hurdles program."
