Williams Cup Winner to Receive Rex Hospital Open Exemption
October 20, 2021 | Men's Golf
The individual champion in the first-ever Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf® October 25-26 at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington will receive an exemption to compete in the Korn Ferry Tour's Rex Hospital Open next June.
The University of North Carolina is hosting the 10-team collegiate men's golf event, which also includes Georgia, Houston, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan State, NC State, UNCW and Vanderbilt.
"We'd like to thank the Korn Ferry Tour, Rex Hospital Open and STITCH Golf®, particularly Brad King and Rick Hopkins for making this exemption happen," says Carolina head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Our players love to compete in any tournament, but the Williams Cup is truly a special and unique event. First, it's our way to thank Roy and Wanda Williams for all they've done for Carolina and our golf program. We have an amazing partnership with STITCH Golf® and Eagle Point, which is a remarkable and demanding golf course. And now we have an exemption that gives the winner of this event an opportunity in professional golf. This is certainly an exciting way for us to cap the fall season.
"The players on every team will embrace the additional incentive of earning a spot into the Rex Hospital Open."
The Rex Hospital Open is contested at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh. Mito Pereira of Chile won the 2021 Rex Open in a playoff. The 2022 tournament is scheduled for June 2-5.
The Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf® is Carolina's fourth and final tournament of the fall semester. UNC won the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke and the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational and tied for fourth at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Tar Heels are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation by Golfstat and No. 6 by Golfweek. Fifth-year senior Ryan Gerard is ranked in the top seven in the nation and Austin Greaser is ranked in the top 30 in both polls. Gerard won the individual title at Duke and Greaser won at Illinois.
