Tar Heels Now 3-0-3 in OT This Season
North Carolina forward Isabel Cox's bid for a game-winning hat trick was tipped over the cross bar by Florida State goalkeeper Cristina Roque with 1:12 to play in the second overtime as the teams played to a 2-2 draw Thursday evening at Dorrance Field.
It was Carolina's sixth overtime game of the season, while the Seminoles went to extra minutes for the first time this season.
The Tar Heels are 10-2-3, 3-2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the top-ranked Seminoles are 14-0-1, 7-0-1. Seventh-ranked UNC is 3-0-3 in six overtime matches this season.
Cox was alone in front of the goal and took a cross from Emily Moxley on the right wing. Cox headed the ball from 12 yards out and her shot appeared headed for a Golden Goal, but Roque made a leaping save to preserve the Seminoles' unbeaten record.
Carolina had taken a 2-1 lead with 28:41 left in regulation. Sam Meza stole the ball at midfield, passed ahead to Moxley who took the ball down the right side. She crossed the ball into the penalty area, where Cox ran onto it and buried a shot from seven yards out for her second goal of the game.
It was Cox's second two-goal game of her career. She netted a pair against Michigan in a third-round match in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
FSU tied the game at 2-2 with 10:47 to play in regulation. Breata Olsson took a pass from Jenna Nighswonger and found the lower left side of the net from 15 yards away for her second of the game and 11th of the season.
Florida State stunned the Tar Heels scoring just 65 seconds into the match. Olsson stole the ball and launched a shot from 35 yards out that nestled into the upper right corner.
Olsson nearly put the Tar Heels in a two-goal deficit later in the opening half when she fired a shot from nearly 45 yards from the goal that caromed off the left post.
Carolina gained the possession advantage midway through the opening half. The Tar Heels made a five-player sub with just under 16 minutes to play and evened the game roughly a minute later.
Emily Murphy slid a pass through the Seminole defense to Cox, who took a touch into the box and slotted a low left-footed shot past Roque with 14:04 to play in the half.
It was the second time this season both teams gave up multiple goals. Virginia Tech scored twice in a 2-2 tie vs. UNC, while the Seminoles allowed a pair in a 5-2 win over Florida.
FSU is 3-0-4 against UNC in the last seven matches between the teams that have gone to extra time dating to 2008.
