Tar Heels Hit The Road For Matchup At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a successful home opener on Tuesday, the UNC women's basketball team is hitting the road.
The team plays its first away game of the 2021-22 season Sunday afternoon at Charlotte. Tip-off at Halton Arena is 3:30 p.m. and the game will air live on ESPN+. For tickets click here.
Both teams come into the game 1-0. UNC's opener on Tuesday was a 92-47 victory over North Carolina A&T at Carmichael Arena. With five Tar Heels in double figures, UNC never trailed in earning the win over the Aggies. Carlie Littlefield and Alyssa Ustby lead Carolina with 15 points each and the team combined to shoot 54 percent from the field.
The 49ers opened away from home, winning 63-45 at Richmond on Tuesday. Sunday's game is the team's home opener.
The Rivalry
The Tar Heels and 49ers are meeting for the second season in a row and the fourth time overall. The most recent meeting was on Dec. 6, 2020, in Chapel Hill, when UNC won 81-75. The Tar Heels outscored their guests 8-3 over the final 1:53 of play to pull out the victory and improve to 5-0 on the season. Stephanie Watts made five of six free throws and Ariel Young hit a three from the corner to account for the Tar Heels' scoring down the stretch. Watts finished with a team-high 17 points for the Tar Heels, who had four players in double figures, including current sophomores Alyssa Ustby (13) and Deja Kelly (11). Charlotte's Octavia Jett-Wilson led all scorers with 22 points.

UNC returns home to host Appalachian State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Carmichael Arena. It's the third of three in-state matchups to start the season. After that, UNC travels to play at TCU on Sunday in the Maggie Dixon Classic. The Tar Heels play five of their first seven games away from home.
