UNC Looks Strong At ITA Fall Nationals

SAN DIEGO - The opening day of the 2021 ITA Fall National Championships saw North Carolina win four of its five matches on Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Two of Carolina's three singles competitors earned victories in their opening round matches. No. 35 Fiona Crawley was the first Tar Heel on court today and would drop the opening set, before rallying for a three-set win over No. 96 Safiya Carrington of LSU.
Fellow sophomore and 88th ranked Reilly Tran knocked off No. 8 Natasha Subhash of Virginia in straight sets, while No. 32 Cameron Morra was upended in a lengthy three-set bout that went in favor of No. 125 Petra Hule of Florida State.
Tran gets Iowa's 12th ranked Alexa Noel in Friday's Round of 16, while Crawley faces Stanford's Connie Ma.
Morra moves to the consolation draw and takes on Stanford rookie standout Alexandra Yepifanova.
The doubles action took place in the afternoon and fourth seed Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty made easy work of Yale's Gong and Kung, 6-2, 6-1. Eighth seed Morra and freshman Carson Tanguilig also cruised to victory in their first-round match over Iowa State's Naklo and Hsieh, 6-3, 7-5.
Crawley and Scotty will see Stanford's Ma and Blake on Friday, while Morra and Tanguilig are scheduled to take on No. 4 Subhash and Sofia Munera of Virginia.
Day two of the fall championships features round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds of main and consolation draw singles and round of 16 doubles matches in both the main and consolation draws.
