CHAPEL HILL—Top-ranked North Carolina got seven points from Katie Hoeg and five from Jamie Ortega on its way to a 14-7 win over No. 6 Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at rainy Dorrance Stadium.
Hoeg tallied two goals and five assists and Ortega scored three times with two assists to lead the way for the Tar Heels. Tayler Warehime was explosive with four goals, including three in the first half, on six total shots. Scottie Rose Growney added two goals and two assists.
The attacker quartet of Hoeg, Ortega, Growney and Warehmine combined for 11 goals, 9 assists and 20 total points on the day.
Ally Mastroianni scored twice for UNC, and Elizabeth Hillman added a goal and an assist. In her first college game, freshman Caitlyn Wurzburger had an apparent goal wiped away by a yellow card for dangerous follow-through.
The Seawolves started strongly in each half before offensive blitzes by the Tar Heels put UNC in control of the game's momentum in each instance.
Stony Brook scored the first two goals of the game and led, 2-0, only 4:03 into the game. Carolina ended the first half on a 9-2 scoring run and led, 9-4 at the break. The Seawolves rushed out of the locker room and scored three goals in the first six-and-a-half minutes of the second half to cut the UNC advantage to 9-7.
The Tar Heels called timeout to regroup, then ripped off a 5-0 run, holding Stony Brook scoreless over the final 23:28 to ice the game.
"We knew that our defense would have our backs and once we got momentum back things would start to turn our way," Hoeg said after the game. "Lacrosse is a game of runs, so we take their momentum, we deal with it and we try to get it back in our favor."
Senior Taylor Moreno (1-0) went the distance in the cage for Carolina, making 10 saves and allowing seven goals. Kameron Halsall (0-1) allowed 14 goals and made seven saves for Stony Brook.
"Stony Brook made a huge effort to get down here yesterday in really bad weather, so thank you to Stony Brook," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said during postgame. "What a great way to start the season. Stony Brook is a really good team, a really tough opponent to play after we haven't competed in 11 months. It will give us a lot of information about ourselves and how we can get better.
"I'm really excited for my team," Levy continued. "When Stony Brook made a run in the second half, it didn't surprise us because they're a really great team. I really liked how we responded to their runs. Overall, a great team win."
Stony Brook out-shot Carolina, 29-23, and draw controls were essentially even at 12-11 UNC. The Tar Heels scored their 14 goals on just 23 shots.
Sunday's matchup wasn't originally on either team's schedule but was a replacement for the contest between UNC and James Madison that had been scheduled for Saturday Feb. 13 but was postponed due to Covid-19 protocols related to the JMU team. Once the UNC-JMU game was canceled on Wednesday, Carolina and Stony Brook quickly came to an agreement to play on Sunday, announcing the game on Thursday morning.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Friday at noon at home against Florida.
