UNC Men 3rd, Women 5th After Day 1 At ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – North Carolina sits third in the men's standings and fifth in the women's following Day 1 of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, being held at Clemson's Indoor Track and Field Complex.
Action resumes Friday at 9:30 a.m. and continues through Saturday afternoon.
The Tar Heels' top Thursday finishes came in the weight throw, in which UNC put two on the podium and had another in the top eight. Junior Troy Yearwood placed second with a throw of 69-2 (21.08) and James Joycey took third (66-11.5). Daniel McArthur was seventh with a throw of 65-4. The throws were personal bests for both Yearwood and McArthur.
Other Tar Heel highlights from Thursday's action:
• Sophomore Sydney Banks cleared a season-best 1.73m to tie for fourth in the women's high jump.
• Senior Jill Shippee threw a lifetime best 20.65m to place fifth in the women's weight throw. Her throw ranks second in program history.
• Sophomore Ben Finger cleared a season-best 4.92m to place eighth in the men's pole vault
• In the women's pole vault, senior Emerson Porter also cleared a season high –3.92m – to place seventh.
• The Tar Heel team of Will Coogan, Jared Williams, Isiah Travis and Allen Siegler placed fourth in the men's DMR in 9:49.29.
• The women's DMR team of Emmeline Fisher, Maiah Walker, Erin Edmundson and Mady Clahane was also fourth in 11:21.77
• UNC also had a notable performance in the prelims as senior Anna Keefer ran a lifetime-best 23.66 in the morning's heats to qualify for the 200-meter final on Saturday. Her time is the second-best in school history.
