Carolina Faces Wake Forest, Notre Dame for Senior Day

CHAPEL HILL – Following a postponement due to COVID-19 contract tracing, the Tar Heels return home for their only ACC matches in Carmichael Arena this spring, facing Wake Forest Friday and Notre Dame Sunday.

Carolina (8-4, 7-3 ACC) takes on Wake Forest (0-10, 0-9 ACC) Friday at 5 p.m. The Tar Heels wrap up the weekend against Notre Dame (10-2, 9-2 ACC) Sunday at 1 p.m. Carolina will recognize its graduates prior to Sunday's match: student-athlete Aristea Tontai, undergraduate assistant coach Maddie Grace Hough, manager Kyle McCormick and second-year athletic trainer Tony Cosby. As announced on Feb. 25, Carmichael Arena will be open to fans. There will be approximately 500 tickets available for fans at a first-come, first-serve basis at the Carmichael ticket office beginning one hour before first serve.

Recently for the Tar Heels
Carolina split a pair of five-set matches in the Empire State, topping Syracuse Friday before falling to Clemson Saturday. Both matches lasted nearly three hours and featured a total of 47 tie scores and 23 lead changes through the weekend.

Despite dropping the first set, North Carolina battled back defeat Syracuse in a three-hour five-set match to begin the weekend.

Although Syracuse earned a 25-14 win in the first set, Carolina steadied out to win sets two and three. However, the Orange knotted the match with a 25-19 set four win. UNC and Syracuse battled point-for-point with 10 tie scores and four lead changes in the fifth set before Carolina prevailed for the 18-16 win.

Four Tar Heels recorded double-doubles in the marathon victory: Parker Austin (23 kills, 20 digs), Kaya Merkler (16 kills, 10 digs), Maylen Mitrovich (29 assists, 15 digs), Annabelle Archer (29 assists, 15 digs). Skyy Howard led UNC at the net with five blocks.

Facing a quick turnaround in Syracuse, N.Y., North Carolina fell short in a five-set match vs. Clemson on Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels won the first two sets of the day. However, Clemson completed the reverse-sweep for the 3-2 decision.

Matching her single-match career-high, Amanda Phegley led UNC with 13 kills. Aristea Tontai anchored UNC's serving with a career-best, six aces. Maylen Mitrovich registered her second double-double in as many days (18 assists, 15 digs).
