GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two Tar Heels were honored Tuesday morning as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced this year's awards for women's basketball.
Janelle Bailey was named All-ACC honorable mention and freshman Deja Kelly was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
Awards were announced Tuesday in advance of the ACC Tournament tipping off Wednesday at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Tar Heels, seeded eighth, open play Thursday at noon vs. ninth-seeded Wake Forest.
Bailey, a senior center from Charlotte, earned All-ACC recognition for the fourth time in her career. She was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2018 and has earned honors each season since then, being named second team as a sophomore and first team last season. She leads UNC in scoring (13.5) and rebounding (8.0) and has six double-doubles this season for a total of 43 in her career. In each of the last three years she has been a top-10 finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award, which goes to the nation's top center.
Kelly, a guard from San Antonio, Texas, was one of eight players named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team. She's had a stellar finish to the regular season, earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors in each of the past two weeks and averaging a team-high 19.3 points over the past four games. She has equaled her career high of 22 points to lead Carolina in scoring in the team's most recent games: a homecourt win over Georgia Tech on Feb. 25 and a win at Virginia Tech on Feb. 28. For the season she's averaging 10.9 points per game.
Both players received honors in the preseason, when Bailey was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team and Kelly to the Newcomer Watch List.
