March 21, 2021 | Baseball
BRIGHTON, Mass. – In the series' rubber match, No. 14 North Carolina (12-6, 8-4) outlasted No. 21 Boston College (11-7, 3-6), 5-4, to win its third ACC series of 2021.
With one out in the ninth inning and the score knotted at four runs, Danny Serretti roped an RBI triple to right-center field on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to give the Tar Heels the lead and the win.
The Berkeley Heights, N.J. native ended the day the 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, a triple, and a home run. Serretti has totaled 13 hits in the nine games, which have included four home runs, two triples, and two doubles.
The Eagles took an early one-run lead in the first inning with a two-out RBI single, but Serretti answered the call and belted his third home run of the season in the second inning to tie the contest.
Tomas Frick followed with a double down the left-field line before Eric Grintz drew a walk. With two runners on base and one out, Mac Horvath lined the ball to left field but the Eagles' left fielder dove and saved two potential runs. North Carolina loaded the bases with two outs but left the trio of Tar Heels on base to end the top of the second.
Boston College reclaimed the lead in the third with a solo home run to right field to take a 2-1 lead.
After back-to-back singles to lead off from Brett Centracchio and Frick, Tyler Causey drew a walk to load the bases for the Tar Heels in the fourth inning. Clemente Inclan was hit with a pitch during the ensuing at-bat which tied the contest.
North Carolina claimed its first lead of the game with a sacrifice fly from Johnny Castagnozzi. The Tar Heels tacked on another run in the fourth with an RBI groundout off of the bat of Angel Zarate to push its advantage to 4-2.
UNC threatened in the fifth inning with two runners on base with no outs, but Boston College worked out of the jam unscathed. Faced with the same situation in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles converted for two runs and tied the game at four.
With a single in the sixth frame, Zarate extended his on-base streak to 38 games and joined Logan Warmoth (41 games from 2016-17) and Michael Busch (38 games in 2019) as the only Tar Heels with on-base streaks of 38 games or more since 1999.
Frick saved a go-ahead run in the seventh inning after he collected a dart from Roberts in right field, dove over the plate, and tagged a runner trying score on the single.
Serretti's go-ahead RBI triple gave the Tar Heels the final 5-4 advantage. Prior to his at-bat in the ninth, the Tar Heels were 0-8 with runners in scoring position.
Max Alba started the game for North Carolina and threw four innings. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs but struck out three Eagles. Shawn Rapp pitched 2.1 innings which yielded three hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, and a strikeout.
O'Brien picked up his first victory of the year and pitched 2.2 shutout innings to close the game for UNC. He walked one and registered one strikeout.
