Stokely Homers in Setback vs. NC State
March 26, 2021 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite a ninth inning home run by freshman Hunter Stokely, No. 24 North Carolina dropped the series opener vs. NC State, 9-2, on Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
NC State scored seven unanswered runs before Danny Serretti laced an RBI-single up the middle as Justice Thompson scored in the third inning. Stokely's first career home run sparked a late offensive push, but it was not enough as the Wolfpack clinched the series opener.
After a one-run first inning, the Wolfpack took a commanding lead in the second as Vojtech Mensik cleared the bases for a grand slam. Totaling 10 hits on the night, NC State tacked on three more runs in the following seven innings.
NC State's Reid Johnston went the distance for his first complete-game win of the season to improve to 2-0. The Tar Heels scattered seven hits throughout the game but struggled to convert on the board. Both Caleb Roberts and Thompson managed two hits apiece.
Austin Love took his first loss of the season to sit at 4-1. Love struck out three in 4.0 complete innings. The Tar Heel relievers managed three strikeouts and limited NC State to two hits in 5.0 innings.
Carolina falls to 13-7 overall, 8-4 in ACC play while NC State improves to 6-9 on the season, 2-8 in conference.
Carolina and NC State resume the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
