CHAPEL HILL – Senior Austin Hitt shot Carolina's low score of the second round and freshman Peter Fountain extended his lead to three after Sunday's second round of the 2021 Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course.

Hitt's 69 and Fountain's 70 helped Carolina build a 12-stroke advantage over Michigan State with 18 holes to play. UNC, which was one of four schools to finish its opening round on Saturday, had a 10-stroke lead over Campbell after the first round was completed Sunday morning.

Carolina is 15 under par. Michigan State is second at 3 under, Campbell is third at 1 under and Arkansas State and Maryland are tied for fifth at 1 over.

The Tar Heels and Spartans both shot 285 in the second round. UNCW, which shot 300 in round one, had the best team score of the second round at 284.

Fountain leads the individual competition with 65-70 for a 9-under-par 135. Michigan State's James Piot (70-68) and Arkansas State's Julien Sale (66-70) are tied for second at 6-under 138. Campbell's Pontus Nyholm (70-69) and Maryland's William Koras (65-74) are fifth at 5-under 139.

Fountain and Koras were tied for the lead after the opening round with 65s. Fountain made seven birdies and no bogeys on Saturday, but began his round on Sunday with a bogey on the 10th hole. However, the freshman from Raleigh, N.C., birdied the 13th, 17th and 5th holes to post a 2-under 70 to establish his three-stroke lead.

Piot's 68 was the low round on Sunday. He made eagle on the par-5 17th and had three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine.

Hitt's 69 was one of only six rounds in the 60s today.

All five of Carolina's starters are in the top 22 on the individual leader board. Fountain leads, Hitt is tied for seventh, Austin Greaser (67-76–143) is tied for 12th, Ryan Gerard (73-72–145) is tied for 19th and Dougie Ergood (72-74–146) is tied for 22nd.

Ryan Burnett, competing as an individual entry, is tied for ninth (69-73–142). Freshman Ryan Smith shot a 1-under-par 71 and senior Mason Elmore also shot 73 for the Tar Heels.

The third and final round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate begins at 8:22 a.m. Monday.
