Women's Lacrosse To Host BC Saturday

• The Tar Heels are ranked No. 1 in the nation by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and USLacrosse. Carolina has started its season with home wins over No. 6 Stony Brook, No. 8 Florida, High Point, No. 11 Duke and No. 25 Vanderbilt.Â
• Carolina has scored 10 or more goals in 21 consecutive games (dating to 2019).
• UNC has held opponents to seven goals or fewer in five consecutive games (every game in 2021). Its closest game in 2021 has been the 11-6 win over No. 8 Florida on Feb. 19.
• After this weekend's games against Duke and Vanderbilt, UNC will host Boston College on March 6 before playing three consecutive road ACC games.
Ortega Breaks UNC Career Goals Record
• Jamie Ortega broke the UNC program record for career goals in the Feb. 28 win over Vanderbilt.
• She scored four goals to run her career total to 199, one more than the previous record of 198 set by Abbey Friend from 2011-14. She also added three assists for a game-high seven points.Â
• Ortega has team highs with 26 points, 16 goals and a shooting percentage of .571 through five games in 2021.
Stout Defense Leads The Way
• Led by senior All-Americas Emma Trenchard and Taylor Moreno, the UNC defense has held each of its five 2021 opponents to single-digit goals.Â
• No Tar Heel opponent has scored more than the seven goals fifth-ranked Stony Brook scored on Feb. 14.
• In the Feb. 28 win over Vanderbilt, Carolina forced a season-high 17 turnovers, including a career-high four by graduate student defender Catie Woodruff.
• Caroline Wakefield leads the Tar Heels with nine caused turnovers in 2021, while Emily Nalls leads UNC with 12 ground balls, often using her speed to turn those loose balls into quick offensive fast-break opportunities.
Series History vs. the Eagles
• Carolina leads the all-time series with Boston College, 17-5. That includes an 8-2 UNC series lead in Chapel Hill and and 11-4 edge in the regular season.
• The two teams didn't play in 2020 due to the cancelation of the season because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Â
• In 2019, they met three times. The Eagles won, 14-8, in Chapel Hill, Carolina returned the favor by beating BC, 15-13, in the ACC championship game in Chestnut Hill, Mass. BC took the rubber match in double overtime, a 15-14 decision in the NCAA semifinal played in Baltimore, Md.
• In 2018, the Eagles beat the Tar Heels in Newton, Mass., in the regular season and Carolina beat the Eagles in the ACC Tournament championship game in Durham, N.C.

• Senior attackers Katie Hoeg and Jamie Ortega are the top two scorers in Carolina women's lacrosse history.Â
• Hoeg has 285 career points, most in UNC history (she broke the school record in 2020).Â
• Ortega has 269 points, ranking second in school history. Ortega moved into second place with her four-goal, two-assist performance on Feb. 21 vs. High Point on Feb. 21.Â
• Hoeg's 177 assists and 2.42 career assists per game are the best in UNC history by a wide margin. Her 73 assists in 2019 are the UNC single-season record.
• Ortega's 199 career goals and 3.67 goals per game are the best in school history by a comfortable margin. She broke the UNC career record of 198 held by Abbey Friend (2011-14) on Feb. 28 vs. Vanderbilt. Ortega recorded a UNC-record 81 goals and 112 points as a sophomore in 2019.Â
• Hoeg and Ortega shared 2020 National Player of the Year honors from Inside Lacrosse. In just seven games last year, they combined for 97 points. Hoeg had 52 points on 22 goals and 30 assists, while Ortega had 45 points on 32 goals and 13 assists (prior to the cancellation of the season due to Covid-19).
• Ortega and Hoeg combined for 216 of Carolina's 490 points in 2019, becoming the first pair of 100-point scorers in program history.
