Final Regular-Season Tourney Before ACCs
Austin Greaser shot a 3-under-par 68 and Austin Hitt finished under par for the third straight round to lead the University of North Carolina to a sixth-place finish at the Arizona State Thunderbird Collegiate Invitational Saturday at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
Carolina was one of eight teams in the 17-team field to shoot under par today and finished the 54-hole event tied for sixth at 22-under 830.
TCU, which shot 20 under par in the second round on Friday, won at 34-under 818. That was four strokes better than the host Sun Devils. Third-ranked Oklahoma State was third at -29 and Texas Tech was fourth at -28. Oregon State was 23, just a stroke ahead of the Tar Heels, who despite birdies by Peter Fountain on 16 and 17, played the final three holes in 5 over par.
Four Tar Heels shot under par for the tournament, led by Hitt, a fifth-year senior, who shot 70-68-70 for a 5-under-par 208 total to tie for 22nd place. It was the second time this season and the 12th time in his collegiate career he posted the best finish by a Tar Heel. It was the first time this season he shot under par in all three rounds in a tournament.
Greaser (67-74-68) and Fountain (67-70-72) tied for 23rd at 4-under 209 and Ryan Gerard (69-70-71) tied for 32nd at 3-under 210. Ryan Burnett (73-68-73) finished 1 over.
Greaser was even through 11 holes before making birdies at 12, 13 and 14. It was his seventh round in the 60s this season.
New Mexico's Albert Boneta, Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg and Utah's Blake Tomlinson tied for medalist honors at 12 under.
The Tar Heels have a quick turnaround to prepare for the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, which gets underway April 23 at the Capital City Club in Milton, Ga.
