Carolina Drops Doubleheader Against Pitt

PITTSBURGH, P.A. – Despite another long home run from Brittany Pickett in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday in Pittsburgh, the North Carolina Tar Heels were not able to win either game against the Pitt Panthers at Vartabedian Field. The Tar Heels fell 6-5, 6-4 in both games in the Steel City.
A slow start for game one, the game remained scoreless through three, with the Tar Heels striking first in the fourth with Bri Stubbs scoring from a Skyler Brooks single. Pitt immediately took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three.
The Heels rallied in the sixth inning of game one, taking the lead off a flurry of hits and a double from Kiannah Pierce to help bring the score to 5-3. Carolina could not hold off the Pitt Panthers, as two home runs in the bottom of the seventh secured the win.
In game two of the doubleheader, Pitt took an early 1-0 lead, but the Tar Heels answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three off of Brittany Pickett's home run, her sixth of the season. The Panthers attacked back, bringing home four runs in the bottom of the fourth, then sealing the game by taking the lead with an RBI in the bottom of the sixth.
Carolina slips to 12-18 overall record, 8-12 in ACC play, while Pittsburgh improves to 13-25 with a 8-20 record in league play. The series finale will be back at Vartabedian Field on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Walkoff Homer for Pitt to Win, Pitt 6, Carolina 5:
» The score remained tied0-0 through the end of the third inning, but Alyssa Stanley saw two 1-2-3 innings in her start as pitcher.
» Bri Stubbs bunted to reach first in the top of the fourth, followed by a Brittany Pickett single through the right side. A Sklyer Brooks single to left field scored a RBI when Bri Stubbs reached home plate to take the 1-0 for the Tar Heels.
» Pitt responded in the bottom of the fourth with a Cami Compson single, then a Seamans home run to take the lead. A Hunter Levesque single was turned into an RBI by Walker Barbee for the 3-1 lead by the Panthers.
» The Tar Heels made a pitching change from Alyssa Stanley to Katie Grace Olinger in the bottom of the fourth.
» In the bottom of the fifth, EC Taylor singled, but is caught stealing on a play by Taylor Greene to Skyler Brooks.
» The Tar Heels rallied in the top of the sixth, starting with Brittany Pickett drawing the walk. Singles from Kayla Baptista, Cambell Hutcherson and Destiny Middleton helped to even the score, 3-3.
» Pitt changed pitchers, in the top of the sixth, but Kiannah Pierce doubled to left center, scoring both Skyler Brooks and Destiny Middleton, giving Carolina the 5-3 lead.
» In the bottom of the seventh, EC Taylor's single, followed by Kayla Lane tied the score. A walk-off home run from Levesque sealed the Panther's victory, 6-5.

Not Quite Enough: Carolina 4, Pitt 6:
» Pitt loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but the Heels defense held them off without a score.
» The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the second with an RBI from EC Taylor, scoring Crittendon.
» The Heels rallied in the top of the fourth: Taylor Greene was hit-by-pitch to reach, followed by a Bri Stubbs single. Brittany Pickett launched her sixth home run of the season to drive both runners in and regain the lead.

» The Heels tried to even the score with a Kristina Burkhardt single, who then converted it into a stolen third and a score on a fielding error by Pitt in the top of the fifth.
» In the bottom of the fifth, Kristina Burkhardt converts a double play on a fly to take out Batesole.
» Pitt singled in the bottom of the sixth to score EC Taylor to extend the lead to 6-4.
» Kiannah Pierced singled in the top of the seventh, putting the tying run at the plate, but the Tar Heels could not tie the game.
