Roberts Homers Twice In Tar Heels' 10-9 Win Over No. 19 Pitt
April 18, 2021 | Baseball
PITTSBURGH – Caleb Roberts smashed a pair of home runs as North Carolina (18-15) topped No. 17 Pittsburgh (20-11) 10-9 in the series finale at Charles L. Cost Field.
Carolina jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first after four extra-base hits, which included a pair of home runs and a pair of doubles.
Caleb Roberts sent the first pitch of the game over the wall to give the Tar Heels the initial lead. After a fielding error by Pittsburgh and a Danny Serretti double, Dallas Tessar plated Brett Centracchio and Serretti with a double down the left-field line.
Clemente Inclan mashed his second home run in as many days with two outs to put the Tar Heels up five runs after the first inning.
Pittsburgh trimmed the North Carolina lead to one run after a sacrifice fly and a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Gage Gillian was the first Tar Heels out of the bullpen and retired the first six batters he faced. In the fifth, Pittsburgh tied the game with a sacrifice fly, but Gillian limited the damage when he stranded three Panthers' baserunners in the frame.
The teams traded sacrifice flies in the middle innings when Colby Wilkerson gave the Tar Heels the 6-5 lead in the sixth.
Roberts hit his second home run of the afternoon to lead off the seventh inning. It marked the third time this season that Roberts homered twice in the same game. He became the first Tar Heels to homer multiple times in three different games since Dustin Ackley did it five times in 2009.
The next batter was Thompson, who mashed his sixth home run of the year. It was the second time in the 2021 season that the Tar Heels hit home runs in consecutive at-bats. Carolina added two more runs after Wilkerson poked a 2RBI single to left field to score Frick and Serretti. The Tar Heels held a 10-5 lead in the middle of the seventh.
Pitt cut the lead to three after a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers added one more in the bottom of the ninth frame but Carolina took the series finale 10-9.
Roberts (2-for-3), Thompson (2-for-5), Serretti (3-for-5) each recorded multiple hits for the Tar Heels' offense.
Gillian earned his first win of the season after tossing 4.2 innings, which yielded two hits, one run, two walks and four strikeouts.
Carolina returns to the diamond Tuesday against Coastal Carolina on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
