Zapp Clinches MTEN ACC Quarterfinal Win Over Hokies
April 23, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ROME, GA.— Freshman Logan Zapp's three-set win provided the winning margin as third-seeded North Carolina edged No. 6 seed Virginia Tech, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championships.
With UNC leading, 3-2, Zapp beat Hugo Maia, 6-3, in the first set at No. 5 singles, only to see Maia win the second, 7-5. Zapp rallied to win the third set, 6-4, giving Carolina the victory.
The Tar Heels (18-2) advance to Saturday's ACC semifinal round to face No. 2 seed Wake Forest, which beat Duke, 4-0, on Friday.
Rain put the tournament behind schedule in the morning, causing a two-hour delay before UNC took the doubles point to start the evening. Benjamin Sigouin and Rinky Hijikata beat Mitch Harper and Alex Ribeiro, 6-1, at No. 2 before No. 35 Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback beat Carolina's No. 79 Simon Soendergaard and Mac Kiger at No. 1.
Brian Cernoch and Peter Murphy, playing at No. 3 doubles, won the clinching doubles matchup, 6-3, over Carlo Donato and Alvaro Ariza.
The Tar Heels played without No. 1 singles player William Blumberg, and Hijikata saw only doubles action on Friday.
The Hokies took the first singles match when Harper beat Sigouin, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 in place of Blumberg. Cernoch responded and gave the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 79 Ribeiro.
Senior Josh Peck won in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-1) at No. 3 singles for a 3-1 Carolina advantage. The Hokies went on to beat Kiger at No. 6 singles before Zapp won the clincher at No. 5.
Soendergaard's match at No. 4 singles went unfinished.
