April 3, 2021 | Baseball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gage Gillian shined out of the bullpen for the Tar Heels on Saturday afternoon as North Carolina (14-11) fell 4-2 to No. 18 Florida State (14-9) at Dick Howser Stadium.
Gillian ended with 4.2 innings pitched, two hits, zero runs, seven strikeouts, and no walks. He set a career-high in innings pitched and strikeouts.
After the Tar Heels' pitching staff combined for seven scoreless innings, Florida State's Robby Martin hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game and even the series.
Florida State took an early 2-0 lead after a two-run home run in the bottom of the opening frame.
Gillian was the first Tar Heel called on in the bullpen and he delivered in the third inning. After inheriting runners on first and third with one out, he struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning.
Caleb Roberts leveled the score in the fourth inning with his team-leading seventh home run. After Danny Serretti led off the frame with a double into the right-field gap, Roberts sent the first pitch of his at-bat over the right-field fence. North Carolina loaded the bases in the fourth after the home run but was unable to scratch across any additional runs.
Gillian continued to impress through the middle innings and turned over the ballgame in the eighth.
The Tar Heels turned to Shawn Rapp to take over for Gillian. Michael Oh, who threw just one pitch, and Connor Ollio, who pitched a third of an inning, each saw action on the mound in the eighth.
Carolina put two runners on in the ninth inning after a lead-off single from Justice Thompson and an intentional walk issued to Roberts but the Tar Heels led both runners stranded.
Nik Pry made an appearance in the ninth.
As a team, UNC collected seven hits, and were led by Tomas Frick (2-for-5) at the plate.
The series finale is slated for noon tomorrow.
