April 3, 2021 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - It was Senior Day for the top-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team. All three seniors in action picked up big wins for the Tar Heels in a 6-1 win over No. 12 NC State on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon from the outdoor courts of Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
North Carolina (20-0, 10-0 ACC) celebrated its four seniors with a brief Senior Day ceremony before the match began. The quartet of Sara Daavettila, Alexa Graham, Anna Harmon and Makenna Jones have enjoyed immeasurable success over the last five seasons, helping guide the Tar Heels to three ITA National Team Indoor Championships, three ACC Team Championships and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2019.
UNC knocked off a pair of top-10 ranked doubles teams to earn the 1-0 lead over the Wolfpack. No. 3 Daavettila and Cameron Morra posted a 6-3 win on court one over No. 9 Anna Rogers and Alana Smith.
NC State took court three's match, 6-4, but No. 48 Jones and Elizabeth Scotty were victorious over No. 5 Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami by a 6-3 margin on court two to grab the opening point.
Freshman No. 106 Reilly Tran was first to post a win in singles. From court six, the Fairfax, Virginia, native won 6-1, 6-1, over Lexi Keberle.
No. 3 Daavettila notched her third top-10 singles win this season with a 7-5, 6-0, win over No. 5 Anna Rogers on court one. The 140th win of her career gave Carolina a 3-0 lead and moved within a point of winning the match.
State pushed the Heels for well over three hours, but in the end it was No. 66 Fiona Crawley that sealed the win with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, victory over Abigail Rencheli from court five.
No. 21 Jones played a spirit affair with Jaeda Daniel on court four. Jones dropped the opening set, but rallied for a three-set victory to make it 5-1 Tar Heels.
No. 37 Graham also earned a three-set win to make it a 6-1 victory.
The win over NC State (14-4, 8-3) extended UNC's program record streak to 38-straight dual match wins, and 45 wins in a row at home.
Carolina improves to 52-3 all-time against NC State. Head coach Brian Kalbas is now 19-0 against the Pack.
