Softball Drops Series at No. 18 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Although North Carolina managed three scoreless frames against the Tigers, No. 18 Clemson broke through for the 9-1 win in six innings on Saturday afternoon in Clemson.
Kristina Burkhardt drove in UNC's lone run in the sixth inning before the Tigers rallied for the win. Katie Grace Olinger struck out four in the second complete game of her career.
Clemson's Marissa Guimbarda and McKenzie Clark highlighted the Tigers' offense each with a home run while Valerie Cagle went the distance for the win.
North Carolina (10-12, 6-7 ACC) returns home to take on Charlotte Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Anderson Stadium. Clemson improves to 26-4 overall, 18-4 in ACC play.
How it happened
» Carolina held off the Tigers in the first two frames, highlighted by three strikeouts from Olinger and a runner caught stealing by Taylor Greene.
» After two scoreless innings, Clemson scored four runs on four hits, including Marissa Guimbarda's two-run home run in the third. The Tigers added two more in the fourth on McKenzie Clark's two-run gone-ball to left.
» Destiny Middleton laced a double down the left line in the sixth before Burkhardt laced an RBI-single through the right side to cut into the deficit.
» However, Clemson responded with a trio of runs on four hits and an error to clinch the win in six innings.
» Striking out four, Olinger went the distance for the second complete game of her career
» Clemson's Valerie Cagle fanned eight in the win.
