Huge Scoring Run Lifts WLAX Past Notre Dame, 18-4
April 30, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Behind big performances from All-Americans Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg, top-seeded North Carolina rolled past No. 4 seed Notre Dame, 18-4, Friday in the semifinals of the 2021 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
UNC (17-0) will play the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Syracuse and No. 3 Boston College on Sunday at noon.
The Tar Heels scored 18 consecutive goals in a dominating effort. UNC held a huge advantage in the draws, winning 18 of the 24 draw controls in the game, including 13 straight at one point in rallying from an early deficit and then building a big lead while holding the Fighting Irish (9-6) scoreless for over 47 minutes of game action. UNC's 14-goal margin of victory matched a tournament record, set by UNC against Notre Dame in the 2015 semifinals, ironically by the same score.
Ortega scored six goals and assisted on another. The ACC's all-time leader in assists, Hoeg scored a goal and racked up six assists. With her final assist Friday – her 13th in just two games of the tournament – Hoeg broke an ACC Championship record. She set the previous record of 12 assists during the 2019 tournament.
Notre Dame started fast with goals from Kasey Choma and Jackie Wolak in the opening six minutes, but North Carolina dominated the rest of the half while holding the Fighting Irish scoreless. UNC won the final 12 draws of the half and took full advantage, scoring 11 straight goals, including five from Ortega, in building an 11-2 halftime advantage.
Hoeg assisted on five of the 11 goals, setting an ACC record for assists in a semifinal game. The previous record of four was set in 2002 by Maryland's Acacia Walker (now the head coach at Boston College) against Virginia.
After Wolak's goal with 24:11 left in the first half, North Carolina held the Fighting Irish scoreless for just over 47 minutes, with Madison Ahern snapping the scoring drought with a goal with 6:52 left in the game.
