Bailey Earns WBCA All-America Honors
April 5, 2021 | Women's Basketball
Senior Janelle Bailey has been named honorable mention All-America by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The honor caps a stellar career for Bailey, a center from Charlotte, N.C., who started all four years for the Tar Heels.
She is now looking ahead to the WNBA Draft, set for April 15.
"I'm very grateful to receive this honor," Bailey said. "I know it takes a lot to even be considered for this, and I'm thankful to my teammates and my coaches, just being there for me especially this last year with Covid – obviously not the most ideal senior year, but we all made it happen.
"When I think about where I started at UNC, I feel like I've grown the most in leadership and expanding my game. I was known as a back-to-the-basket post player when I came – I could shoot a little bit but it was not what I wanted to do, and I'm sure that was on the scouting report. I would be doing my team a disservice by not expanding my game, so I took that to heart and made sure I could find a way to get better every year."
Bailey became the fifth player in program history to total more than 1,700 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. A four-year starter for the Tar Heels, she led the team this season in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg) and reached double figures in 22 of 24 games.
She was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2018 and went on to earn All-ACC honors in each year of her career.
Among active DI players, she ranks fourth in career double-doubles (44), sixth in rebounds (1,010) and 18th in points (1,724), and is the highest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference player in each of those categories.
As a senior, she was a Top 10 finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award as nation's top center, the third year in a row she'd been in the top 10, and earned All-ACC honorable mention.
"Janelle's consistency in a Carolina uniform is celebrated yet again with this prestigious honor," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "JB has been a staple in the Tar Heel lineup, and has continued to add layers to her game throughout her illustrious career. Her trophy case is full! She meant a lot to many and did a lot in her collegiate career, and we very much look forward to following her success closely at the next level."

The WNBA draft will air on ESPN on April 15 at 7 p.m.
"I'm thankful for where I've been and now I want to look ahead and continue to work hard and improve," Bailey said. "Being a force on the block as well as a strong mid-range player who is able to drive will make me a better player and better pro. I've done a lot in my four years here, adding to my game each year, and I think this honor is a reflection of that hard work. I look forward to continuing to grow my game and represent UNC as I go on to the pros."
