UNC Tops No. 11 South Carolina 3-2 In 10 Innings
April 6, 2021 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Caleb Roberts plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning on Tuesday night at Truist Field as North Carolina (15-12) knocked off No. 11 South Carolina (19-8) in the Tar Heels' first extra-inning game of 2021.
Dallas Tessar led off the 10th inning to spark the North Carolina offense with a pinch-hit bunt single down the third-base line. After Angel Zarate reached on a fielder's choice and Justice Thompson legged out an infield single, Roberts lined a single up the middle to give Carolina a 3-2 lead- one that would not be squandered.
UNC's bullpen turned in another incredible performance under the lights at the Charlotte Knight's (AAA- Chicago White Sox) ballpark. Gage Gillian, Davis Palermo, Nik Pry, and Caden O'Brien combined for eight and two-thirds innings and allowed just three hits and one run.
Gillian threw 2.2 innings, which yielded one hit, no runs, no walk and three strikeouts. Palermo tossed 0.2 innings with a pair of walks, while Nik Pry turned in 2.1 innings with one hit, one run, one walk and three strikeouts.
O'Brien was electric and picked up his third win of the season. He threw the final 3.0 innings, issued just one walk, and struck out a pair.
The three hits allowed by the Tar Heel pitching staff were the fewest since giving up three versus Clemson on March 14.
The top of the UNC line up produced the entire evening and was led by the Tar Heel's No. 2 hitter, Thompson, with three hits. Carolina's lead-off hitter, Zarate, and UNC's No. 3 bat, Roberts, each registered two.
North Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after the Tar Heels began the game with four-straight hits. After Angel Zarate led off with a triple to right-center, Justice Thompson plated him with a single through the left side. Caleb Roberts followed with a single to move Thompson to second. Danny Serretti loaded the bases with no outs with a bloop single to center field.
After a double-play and a strikeout, the Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the opening frame.
The Tar Heels threatened again in the third inning with two runners on after Thompson and Zarate each collected their second hits to lead off the inning, but both were stranded.
North Carolina reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning when Hunter Stokely picked up a pinch-hit RBI with a groundout to second base. After Serretti and Roberts drew back-to-back walks and Johnny Castagnozzi laid down a sacrifice bunt, Stokely put the Tar Heels up 2-1.
South Carolina tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.
After three scoreless innings, the Tar Heels reclaimed the lead for the final time to win its first neutral site game of the year.
Carolina is back at home this weekend against Duke for a three-game series. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday night.
