Softball Drops One-Run Game To UVA, Series Schedule Altered
April 9, 2021 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Although the Tar Heels managed to the series opener twice, North Carolina dropped Friday afternoon's game to the Virginia Cavaliers, 5-4, before lightning postponed the second game of the original doubleheader in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Virginia took an early lead on a two-run home run by Katie Goldberg before extending the lead to 3-0 on a pair of UNC miscues. North Carolina battled back by capitalizing on two errors from Virginia, cutting the margin to one run. Kristina Burkhardt and Kiersten Licea led the game for the Tar Heels, both going two for three, each with an RBI to tie the game in the third and sixth innings. Despite a tie game in the sixth, Virginia reclaimed the lead on Goldberg's third RBI of the day for the 5-4 decision.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, North Carolina (10-14, 6-8 ACC) and Virginia (12-19, 8-14 ACC) will continue the series Saturday at noon before wrapping up with a doubleheader beginning Sunday at noon.
