RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Jill Shippee took first in the hammer throw to propel the Tar Heel women to second place after Day 1 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Competing at NC State's Paul Derr Track and Field Facility, the UNC men are in fourth, led by a pair of third-place finishes.

Shippee's throw of 67.67m (222-0) gave her a second ACC crown in an event she also won in 2019. She placed fourth as a freshman in 2018. Hers was the only Carolina win on Friday, but the Tar Heels also had three bronze-medal finishers who joined Shippee in earning first team All-ACC honors:
• James Joycey was third in the men's hammer with a throw of 66.29m (217-6).
• Anna Keefer was third in the women's long jump with a distance of 6.32m (20-9).
• Patrick Anderson was third in the men's 10K run.

Earning second-team honors, for fourth through sixth places, were:
• Emerson Porter, who tied for fourth in the women's pole vault with a personal best 4.13m (13-6 ½).
• Roman Mitchell, who placed fourth in men's javelin with a throw of 65.36m (214-5).

The Tar Heels are back in action on Friday morning, beginning with the women's javelin at 11 a.m.
