UNC Tied for 2nd After First Round
Austin Hitt and Austin Greaser shot under par in rainy conditions to lead the University of North Carolina on day one of the 2021 NCAA Noblesville Men's Golf Regional Monday at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Â
Hitt, a fifth-year senior playing in his fourth NCAA regional, shot a 2-under-par 70 to post Carolina's low round. Greaser, a sophomore playing in the postseason for the first time, finished the opening round with a 1-under 71.
Â
Freshman Peter Fountain and senior Ryan Gerard both shot even-par 72s, while junior Ryan Burnett shot 78.
Â
The Tar Heels are in a three-way tie for second place at 3-under 285. Texas leads after 18 holes at 6 under with Tennessee and North Florida deadlocked with UNC at 3 under.
Â
Louisville is in fifth place at even par and UNCW is sixth at 2 over. The top five teams from Noblesville and five other regionals advance to the NCAA Championship round May 28-June 2 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
Travis Vick of Texas shot 68 to lead the 75-player field. Vick, Louisville's Max Kennedy and North Florida's Nick Infanti were the only three players to shoot below 70.
Â
Hitt is tied for fourth. He was even par through four holes, made four birdies over the next 12 holes, before making a double bogey on 17 to finish 2 under.
Â
Greaser had three birdies and nine pars through 12, then went double-birdie-bogey over the next three holes to end with a 71.
Â
Fountain, the ACC champion, stood at 1 under through 11, and parred the next six holes, but finished a bogey 5 at the par-4 18th hole to finish even.
Â
Gerard also shot an even-par 72. He was the only player in the field to birdie the 476-yard par-4 15th hole, which played 0.61 over par. The top six teams – Texas, UNC, North Florida, Tennessee, Louisville and UNCW – played the 15th at a collective 13 over par.
Â
The Tar Heels are paired with Louisville and UNCW in Tuesday's second round. Those three teams begin play at 8:30 a.m. on the first hole.
