Greaser 7th After 36 Holes
Ryan Burnett made seven birdies on his way to a team-leading 68 and Austin Greaser shot under par for the second straight day as the University of North Carolina maintained a top-five position Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Noblesville Regional.
The Tar Heels shot 4-under-par 284 today at the Sagamore Club, one stroke better than yesterday, but fell one spot to third place at a combined two-day total of 7-under 569. Texas leads at 15 under par, Tennessee is one shot ahead of Carolina at 8 under, Louisville is fourth at 6 under and North Florida is fifth at 3 under.
The top five teams after Wednesday's third round advance to the NCAA Championship round, which begins May 28 in Scottsdale, Ariz. UNCW is in sixth place at 6 over par with UAB two strokes higher in seventh.
Burnett had an up-and-down first nine holes, playing the back side in even par with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys. The junior from Lafayette, Calif., then birdied the third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes to shoot 4-under-par 32 on the front side. The 68 marked the third time Burnett, Carolina's career leader in stroke average, has shot in the 60s in his last five rounds.
Burnett's 32 equaled the best front nine in today's second round. His 11 birdies through 36 holes tie the second most in the field.
Greaser opened the regional on Monday with a 71 and followed that with a 2-under-par 70 today. He was 4-under through his first dozen holes, then double bogeyed the 181-yard par 3 4th hole. The double was the only blemish on his card, coming on the hole that played the second most difficult in the round. The Vandalia, Ohio, native is tied for seventh in the individual standings, three strokes behind Blake McShea of UNCW and Nick Infanti of North Florida.
Fifth-year senior Austin Hitt and senior Ryan Gerard are tied for 19th place at even par. Gerard shot even-par 72 for the second straight day, while Hitt had it to 4 under for the tournament before shooting 4 over par over the final six holes.
ACC champion Peter Fountain shot 74 and is tied with Burnett and five others in 34th place at 2-over 146.
