ATLANTA – Down 10-3 in the final frame, North Carolina (26-24) put together a ninth inning rally and had the tying run at the plate but fell 10-6 to Georgia Tech (28-21) to wrap up the 2021 regular season.

For the first time during this series, North Carolina plated the game's first run. After Mac Horvath legged out an infield single and Max Riemer was hit by a pitch, Johnny Castagnozzi poked a two-out single up the middle to put the Tar Heels on top 1-0 in the second inning.

Angel Zarate drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, but the Tar Heels left the bases loaded.

Georgia Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning after two RBI singles and an RBI double. The Tar Hels used three pitchers in the frame- Max Alba, Caden O'Brien and Nik Pry.

The Yellow Jackets posted six runs in the third inning to take a 9-1 lead. An RBI double began the scoring before two bases-loaded hit-by-pitches pushes the lead to 6-1. With the bases loaded, Georgia Tech smacked a bases-clearing double to take the eight-run advantage.

Through three innings, Carolina had used six different pitchers.

Down 10-1, Justice Thompson led off the fifth inning with his seventh home run of 2021 to cut the lead to eight, 10-2.

Carolina cut the lead to seven in the sixth inning when Castagnozzi plated Centracchio with a sacrifice fly, who reached on a double earlier in the frame.

Never backing down, Angel Zarate trimmed the Yellow Jacket's lead to 10-5 with a two-run blast in the ninth inning. With two outs, Horvath scored Serretti with a double off of the outfield wall which scored the Tar Heels' final run. The Tar Heels loaded the bases and had the tying run at the plate, but GT struck out its sixth batter of the contest to close the game.

Thompson, Horvath, and Centracchio each recorded a pair of hits to lead the UNC offense.

UNC ends the regular season third in the ACC Coastal Division. The Tar Heels' schedule for the ACC Tournament, which begins Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., will be released Sunday.
