Men's Golf Advances to 4th Round at NCAA Championship
May 30, 2021 | Men's Golf
UNC 6th, Freshman Fountain 12th After 54 Holes
The University of North Carolina men's golf team made the cut for the fourth round of stroke play after tying for sixth place through 54 holes in the 2021 NCAA Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Tar Heels shot 7-over-par 287 on Sunday and dropped one spot into a tie for sixth with Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. Fifteen of the 30 teams in the field advance to Monday's fourth round. The top eight teams after stroke play concludes on Memorial Day qualify for match play, beginning with quarterfinal-round action on Tuesday morning.
Freshman Peter Fountain of Raleigh led UNC in the third round with a 1-under 69, his second consecutive round in the 60s after a 68 on Saturday. He's the first Tar Heel with multiple rounds in the 60s in an NCAA Championship since Barden Berry in 2007 and the first UNC freshman to ever accomplish that.
Fountain was Carolina's only player under par on Sunday. He is tied for 12th in the individual standings at even-par 210. Oklahoma State's Bo Jin has the lead at 9-under 201.
Ryan Burnett (71), Austin Greaser (73), Ryan Gerard (74) and Austin Hitt (75) helped UNC advance to the fourth round for the first time since 2018.
By advancing, the Tar Heels are assured of their fourth straight Top-20 finish in NCAA Championship play.
"Our guys battled like crazy today and again showed their mental toughness and grit," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "The course and conditions are very difficult, but we look forward to the challenge of competing at Grayhawk again tomorrow."
UNC, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest are 13-over 853 through 54 holes. Top-seed Florida State and No. 3 Oklahoma State shot the best rounds of the day with 6-under-par 274s. The Seminoles made the biggest move of the round, climbing six spots in the standings to fifth at 9 over. FSU, Oklahoma State and Illinois (-2) were the only teams under par in the third round.
Oklahoma State is the only team under par for the tournament at 12 under. Oklahoma is second at +1, Arizona State is third +2, Illinois is fourth +4 and FSU is fifth at +9.
The Tar Heels, Commodores and Demon Deacons have a one-stroke lead over Pepperdine, which is 14 over and a two-shot advantage over Clemson at 16 over.
