Hodgson Set To Join UNC Women's Basketball Program
May 31, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Eva Hodgson will join the North Carolina women's basketball program this summer, arriving in Chapel Hill with two years of eligibility remaining. The 5-9 guard, a native of Rindge, N.H., averaged 20.7 points and 3.6 assists per game in her sophomore season at William & Mary.
"We are thrilled to add Eva to our Tar Heel roster," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "A proven winner, Eva will bring experience, guard play, and competitiveness that will immediately help our program. She is a high-level shooter and scorer, and is a gritty defender both on and off the ball.
"As a small-town New Hampshire girl myself, I've known Eva a long time and I'm thrilled to finally be able to coach her. Her success in the CAA speaks for itself, but we know that we are getting someone who brings so much more than accolades and statistics. In Eva, we are getting a great teammate who is eager to get started with her teammates."
Hodgson played two seasons at William & Mary, sitting out in 2020-21. She was the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2019 and a first-team All-CAA selection in 2020, when she led the Tribe in scoring. Her scoring average of 20.7 points per game led the CAA, as did her field goal percentage (.540) and free throw percentage (.912). She ranked fifth in assists with 3.6 per game, sixth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.1, and sixth in three-pointers per game with 2.0.
At UNC, she plans to pursue graduate studies at Kenan-Flagler Business School.
"I'm captivated by UNC and the culture of the women's basketball program," Hodgson said. "I've been a fan of Coach Banghart's since she recruited me back in high school, and there was no way I could pass up the opportunity to finally play for my fellow southern New Hampshire native. At UNC I'll play with and against some of the best athletes in the college game, and the Carolina roster of returning and incoming players excites me for what's to come in the next few years. This is an opportunity that holds so many amazing experiences on and off the court, and to say I'm blessed to get to be a Tar Heel doesn't begin to cover it."
Hodgson is fifth of seven siblings. Her parents, Greg and Sherree, both played basketball at Messiah College. Two older brothers also played, Ezra at Plattsburgh (N.Y.) and Elisha at Salve Regina (R.I.). Younger sister Seraphina will be a freshman on the women's basketball team at Maine this fall.
Hodgson is the second transfer guard to join the Tar Heel program during the offseason. The other is Carlie Littlefield, who comes to UNC as a graduate student after four years at Princeton.
