CHAPEL HILL— Sixty-three Tar Heels have earned induction into Chi Alpha Sigma honorary society and Katie Hoeg, the leading scorer in the history of the UNC women's lacrosse program, has been announced as a winner of the honorary society's postgraduate scholarship.
Â
To qualify for induction, a student-athlete must carry a 3.4 or better cumulative grade point average, have reached at least junior status academically and have lettered in a varsity sport.
Â
Hoeg, a 2021 UNC graduate who majored in chemistry with minors in biology and English, is attending UNC's Adams School of Dentistry and plans to pursue an advanced degree in oral surgery. She and Louisville field hockey player Meghan Schneider were selected as the two recipients of Chi Alpha Sigma's Nick Mourouzis Postgraduate Scholarship for the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
"I am very excited for both Meghan and Katie to receive these scholarships to aid them as they continue on in their academic careers," said Kellen Wells-Mangold, executive director of the National College Athlete Honor Society. "Both of these student-athletes excelled at some of the highest levels in both the academic and athletic arenas and truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. Congratulations to them and to their respective athletics staff members and coaches who supported them along the way."
Â
The two $3,500 scholarship recipients were chosen from a field of nominated Chi Alpha Sigma inductees. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must be Chi Alpha Sigma inductees from an active chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society; be seeking their postgraduate degree in the immediate upcoming academic year; be enrolled in a full-time program of studies; have exhausted all athletic eligibility prior to starting graduate-level coursework; and be formally nominated by their respective chapter advisor.
Â
Hoeg, who is from Mattituck, N.Y., is also a recipient of an Atlantic Coast Conference Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She completed her athletic career as one of the most decorated players in Carolina women's lacrosse history. The four-time All-America honoree is the Tar Heels' all-time leader in points and assists and currently ranks second in NCAA history for career assists. She was named the co-National Player of the Year by Inside Lacrosse in 2020 and became just the second UNC women's lacrosse student-athlete in history to be selected for Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 2020.
