Fisher's Late Goal Leads Men's Soccer By Campbell, 1-0
September 14, 2021 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL—The fourth-ranked University of North Carolina men's soccer team got a goal from Cameron Fisher in the 82nd minute and beat Campbell, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Dorrance Field.
Â
Fisher scored at the 81:28 mark off a set play that started with a long free kick from Riley Thomas, who lofted a pass from just over midfield to Fisher for his third goal of the season.
Â
Fisher now is tied for the team lead in goals with Ernest Bawa and leads the team in points with eight.
Â
The Tar Heels improved to 4-1-1 with the victory, while Campbell fell to 3-2-1.
Â
UNC, ranked as high as No. 4 nationally by Top Drawer Soccer this week, held the Camels without a shot in a strong defensive performance after Friday's loss at No. 5 Pittsburgh.
Â
"We worked hard defensively and offensively to create chances, and them not having a shot is obviously good defense," said Fisher, a junior midfielder from Palo Alto, Calif. "It was totally a team win. We worked hard and grinded it out."
Said Thomas of his game-winning pass on the free kick:Â
Â
"I can't remember exactly how much time was left, I think it was around 10, nine minutes left. I knew it was coming down to the moment of the game where we needed to get a chance. I just felt like getting it up there to give the guys the opportunity up there was my main thought or concern. I felt like if we got a chance, we're going to be able to capitalize on it."
Fisher did just, giving Carolina the edge as the defense continue to stymie Campbell.
The teams played a scoreless first half with UNC outshooting the Fighting Camels by a 1-0 margin.Â
Â
UNC peppered Campbell with eight second-half shots, however, and nearly scored a goal early in the half when Aldair Sanchez hit the post with his shot with just over 42 minutes remaining.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to the field against Duke at Dorrance Field on Sunday Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
Â
