Track & Field Shows Strength And Speed At Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Tar Heels turned in stellar early-season performances Friday evening as the North Carolina track and field teams competed at the Hokie Invitational, the second event of the 2022 indoor season. UNC is competing at Rector Field House for the second weekend a row and will be back in action there on Saturday.
On Friday, highlights came from both veterans and newcomers. Senior Jill Shippee threw a lifetime best 69-6.75 (21-20m) in the women's weight throw, placing third in the field with the second-longest distance in school history.
On the other end of the experience continuum, freshman Parker Wolfe, competing in his first collegiate track meet, placed second in the men's mile in a time of 4:00.53. It was the fifth-fastest indoor time in program history. Wolfe was one of eight Tar Heels racing in that event, with six finishing in the top 11 in the field.
The Tar Heels had six runners in the women's mile field, led by Sasha Neglia in 10th at 4:48.46.
Four Tar Heels placed in the top 10 in the women's 1000 meters, led by Carlee Hansen, another Tar Heel competing in a collegiate track meet for the first time, in 2:46.39.
Two UNC pole vaulters turned in strong performances, with Alex Potts and Emerson Porter placing sixth and eighth in the women's field after both clearing four meters.
